Make December count

It’s the most wonderful time of the year……for job hunting! Yes, that is right, December is an excellent month to search for that next perfect role.  Whether you have been quietly looking for the last few months or actively interviewing, December is not the month to put the job search on hold. Below are 5 reasons why you should amp up that search.

1.     Less competition – A lot of people do take the month off from their searches.  They think that no one hires at the end of the year, and they will just pick it up when the new year comes around. The job market is competitive so keep that advantage and don’t slow your momentum!

2.     Networking opportunities GALORE – I bet I could go to a networking event every day/night in December.  These are amazing opportunities for you to meet new people and tell them about your job search.  I met one of my former bosses at a hair salon, so you never know when you are going to run across someone that has the perfect job for you.

3.     Use it or lose it budgets – Let’s face it, the economy is GREAT right now!  And many companies still have money left in their hiring budgets that they need to “spend”  before the end of the year, or they lose it! Many hiring managers understand that  their 2020 budget could exclude the position if they don’t commit to it in 2019.

4.     Employers like to start the new year off ready to go.  A lot of the organizational planning is completed by the end of the prior year. This process starts WAY before December is even a thought.  And most employers know that for them to reach their goals for the new year, they are going to have to be ready to hit the ground running in January.

5.     Overall, people are in better moods.  I love the month of December because I know I can always talk to people about their holidays or what their plans are for the new year—and they are excited about all of it! The same thing goes for employers that are looking to hire. A good mood makes it much easier to build relationships with people you are interviewing with because overall, they are simply happier individuals in December (a clarification that this does not apply to all)!

Bottom line—Do NOT stop your search in December!  In my prior role, I trained recruiters and one of the things I would say is that if you take December off, your January is going to feel the pain. The same is true about  job hunting. If you take a month off and don’t continue your momentum, you will be starting the year off behind!
